Recently discovered documents show that Giambologna, the great sculptor at the court of the Medici whose bronzes delighted all Europe, made six large garden sculptures for King Henri IV of France, otherwise essentially unknown. Introduction. Before the s, Giambologna (a.k.a. Giovanni da Bologna) was of interest to a relatively small circle of scholars. Several of his monuments featured in histories of large-scale sculpture, and his marble Sabine in particular stood as a touchstone for books and articles on “Mannerist” style.

The two most important studies of his overall career, nevertheless, were a book. During the half-century following Michelangelo's death in the gracefulnd seductive style of Giambologna dominated Italian sculpture, and copies ofis bronze statuettes spread his influence throughout Europe.

While the apparently bizarre play of water no longer exists, some treasures that reflect the grandiose nature of the project remain: the gigantic statue of Appennino by Giambologna, for instance, that hides a secret room in its head.

Giambologna's third major work was the Rape of a Sabine (, Loggia Dei Lanzi, Piazza della Signoria, Florence). One of the greatest sculptures ever, it represented the climax of his career as a figure sculptor, uniting three figures into a single spiral composition.
